On Vijayadashami, the tenth day of the beautiful Indian festival of Dussehra, the traditional Dasara procession (locally known as Jumboo Savari) is taken out on the streets of Mysore city. The city which derives its name from the demon Mahishasura has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival with great pomp and ceremony and is a prime tourist attraction especially for foreigners and out-of-towners. According to legend,Vijayadashami denotes the victory of truth over evil and was the day when the Hindu Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon Mahishasura.

The chief attraction now is the beautiful idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari which is placed on a golden palanquin atop a decorated elephant. The Dasara procession is a wonder to behold with colourful tableaux, folk dances, ceremonially dressed soldiers, music bands, decorated elephants, handsomely adorned horses and camels. The procession starts from the exquisitely decorated Mysore Palace, winds its way through the city streets and culminates at Bannimantap where the banni tree (Prosopis spicigera) is worshipped. The famed procession attracts thousands of visitors every year from across the world.
This striking wall scenery is a lovely objet d'art that has been sculpted from the finest rosewood by deft artisans. The delicately etched saddles are covered with traditional alpana motifs. Ornamental inlay work involves superb craftsmanship wherein pieces of different coloured woods are artistically wedged into the design. The white inlaid wood contrasts strikingly with the rich earthy and rustic tones of reds, browns and yellows to give a three-dimensional effect. The Dasara tableau is an elaborate work of art and makes a wonderful home décor accessory and is ideal for corporate gifts and special occasions.
Care: Keep indoors. Lightly dust the figurine as required. We recommend the use of a mild wood cleaner on a swab of cotton wool.
