Vishnu is the name given to the protector and sustainer of the universe. The Lord has incarnated himself into various forms of Life through different yugas (ages or eons) at times when Dharma was at stake ‘cos of the evil elements and that sum up to ten such incarnations. These incarnations are termed as the 'avatars' of the Lord each holding a story of great inspiration that demands respect. Each avatar of the Lord is described, further below, with appropriate details of the situation under which he was compelled to incarnate himself to appear on the earth.
Lord Vishnu is depicted dark blue in color, crowned, and bears four hands that hold his emblems—the conch, discus, mace, and lotus. He mounts the eagle Garuda, and his consort Lakshmi, (the goddess of wealth), who often expresses her devotion by massaging the lords feet as he lies on the coils of Shesha (the snake).
Inspite of many explanations for the 10 avatars of Vishnu, one can see a striking similarity of these stories with the theory of evolution of life and these

2. Koorma (the tortoise)
3. Varaha (the boar)
4. Narasimha (the human-lion)
5. Vamana (the dwarf)
6. Parasurama (the angry man, Rama with an axe)
7. Lord Rama (the perfect man, king of Ayodha)
8. Lord Krishna (the divine statesman)
9. Balarama (elder brother of Krishna)
10. Kalki (the mighty worrior)
The last Avatar is yet to appear, and in many versions of the mythology, the ninth incarnation is mentioned as Lord Buddha
