Four minarets take up each corner of the plinth, facing chamfered corners and frame the tombs. The marble dome that surmounts the tomb is its most spectacular feature and is accentuated as it sits on a cylindrical "drum" and decorated with a lotus design. Tall decorative spires (guldastas) extend from edges of base walls, and provide visual emphasis to the height of the dome. The main dome is crowned by a gilded spire and topped by an Islamic moon. The exterior decorations and the interior adornments of the Taj are among the finest to be found in Mughal architecture.
