The Tandava Nataraja performs the Tandava Nritya, the dance in which the universe is created, maintained, and resolved. The Lord lifts his left leg and balances over a demon or dwarf (Apasmara) who symbolizes ignorance. In his hands, he holds a trident (trishul) symbolizing the Lord's power to destroy evil and ignorance, a drum (damaru) symbolizing Creation and Agni or fire, which signifies destruction. One of his hands are held in the Abhaya mudra signifying fearlessness and bestows protection from both evil and ignorance. Heavenly nymphs and ganas reverently attend to the Lord.
